The Pied Pipers of Autism begins with a personal mystery. My nephew, Otto, turns out to have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and I found myself wondering why. Is the cause of ASD 90% genetic, as many academic investigators believe, or has something else in the world surrounding our children changed? What could be causing the number of children acquiring this disorder go from 1 in 20,000 some 50 years ago to 1 in 70 or less today? This is the mystery of ASD, a mystery causing too much suffering in too many families around the world. My wife thought Otto liked the Baby Einstein video series too much when he was an infant. My hunch was there was a connection. From this hunch, The Pied Pipers of Autism was born almost three years ago and with it hopefully the solution to the mystery of ASD. The book begins with an exploration of the nature of ASD. This journey takes the reader all the way from social networks down to the level of the synapses in the brain. Along the way the reader will discover the relationships between ASD and gender, genetics, the brain, 3-D vision, twins with their private languages, Romanian orphans, Helen Keller, the descended larynx and much more. The book answers such questions as How can you protect your infant from developing ASD? Clue It has nothing to do with vaccines. Is one-way communication dangerous for some young children and infants? Has the study of genetics helped us understand ASD? Why our sons are up to 17 times more vulnerable to Asperger’s (a milder form of ASD) than our daughters? Why twins and second sons are so susceptible to ASD? What should you look for in a program to help a child who already has ASD? And the big question in the end, why the lives of so many children like Otto are being affected by ASD, and why the prevalence of ASD is exploding throughout the world. The role of genetics is a part of the story of ASD but only a part. This book shows the increase in autism has been fueled by the invasion into the nursery of sources of one-way communication such as TV, videos, video devices and talking toys. The book shows it is these Pied Pipers of Autism, who have been enchanting our children away from normal social development and into the fearful social isolation of ASD. This well-illustrated book will hopefully get the attention of the soon-to-be parents, pediatricians or anyone who advises parents, and researchers in the autism field. It is aimed at people who care for infants and children and anyone whose life has been touched by a child with ASD. The Pied Pipers of Autism provides a new and badly needed understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The Pied Pipers of Autism How Television Video and Toys cause ASD Leonard Oestreicher MD 9781481073356 Books
Dr. Oestreicher’s review of the scientific principles underlying the Integrated Theory of Autism reflects an honest, clearheaded approach to analyzing what happens in the brains of very young human beings when they are exposed to screens in place of interacting with the natural world of people. Case histories are flowing in from around the world (including the USA) reinforcing and supporting this view of one of the major causes for the otherwise inexplicable radical rise in autism in the Western World over the last forty years. In essence, a baseless assumption has been made during the introduction and expansion of screen exposure into human culture that there was no reason to be concerned about consequential repercussions in so doing. Dr. Oestreicher is in the process of initiating a pilot study in conjunction with local educational institutions to achieve academically acceptable evidence of this phenomenon – even as reports flow in from around the world of hundreds of case histories wherein clinicians and others working with autistic children have found a return to neurotypical status as a result of screen deprivation. This is indeed a watershed moment in our history and the 21st century will be a better time because of Dr. Oestreicher’s work.Product details

The Pied Pipers of Autism How Television Video and Toys cause ASD Leonard Oestreicher MD 9781481073356 Books Reviews
If you have ever looked into the eyes of an autistic child you must have asked the qustion, "where are they? where do they go? how can I connect?" I have asked that question and felt the frustration of not being able to make a connection but knowing that there is something very special about these children. I have never been satisfied with the genetics theory. I have always wondered what else is involved and what we can do. The more we learn about the autism spectrum the more profound the questions. There must be more to the answers.
Dr. Oestreicher's book, The Pied Piper of Autism How Television, Video and Toys cause ASD, offers a new, evidence based theory of the cause of autism beyond genetics. It is exciting and encouraging to know there is something that we can do. Dr. Oestreicher explains how our environment influences our children. He also explains how the brain takes in information and processes the information. How one-way communication from electronic devices, videos, television and toys limit healthy, normal brain development. Our children depend on us for everything from the time they are born. The one-way communication experienced with electronic devices, videos, television and toys denies the two-way, open communication that nurtures and allows healthy development of the brain.
The cases of reported autism are dramatically on the rise and epidemic. Why? Is it the emergence and rapid movement of the social media influence? Behavioral science is questioning the impact social media is having on all children and adults in our society at large.
An epidemic? Can we slow it down and hopefully reverse this trend. Dr. Oestreicher believes we can. His book explains how with a real life example and offers clear and easy to understand explanations. He explains why parents and those providing care for children should not expose their children to one-way communication. He implores parents/care givers to make the commitment to provide healthy, open, two-way communication in an environment that allows the child to thrive, develop and communicate.
I found hope and possibility in Dr. Oestricher's written words and encourage everyone to read The Pied Pipers of Autism How Television, Video and Toys cause ASD.
The author claims that autism is caused in large part by watching baby videos and playing with certain toys, because he saw that behavior in one autistic child. This is, to put it mildly, illogical.
Assuming for the moment that autistic children watch a lot of baby videos, that certainly does not mean that the baby videos caused the condition. Has he even considered the possibility that autism caused the watching of baby videos? I know first hand of cases where that is indeed the cause & effect relationship. Many parents do not allow their little children to watch videos at all, and when the child regresses into severe autism it becomes extremely difficult to keep the child occupied and maintain the parents' sanity without at least some baby video, and the child suddenly develops a near-obsession with baby videos and certain types of toys such as electronic noise-making supposedly education toys, which typically have demo modes the kids are quick to activate. While stopping the kids from some of this behavior is likely a good idea, that does not mean the toys or videos caused the condition.
There was a research paper a few years ago that found a correlation between autism and TV watching, and declared TV watching causes autism. This fails the most basic logic of causality, since it was only an association, and they didn't even notice that the order of events was wrong. It is much more likely in general, and certainly true in at least some cases, that autism causes TV watching.
Further, the state of the science regarding inherited genetics as a cause of autism shows that genetics is at most a minority causal factor.
This book tells you almost nothing about what does, and does not, cause autism.
Any proper researcher will tell you that anecdotes have no place in scientific proof. This doctor has no proof behind his musings, and no right to write a book preaching them as Truth. Utter rubbish.
Awesome book! I will forever be spreading its message! A must read for families on the importance of social interaction and real world experiences in a child's first years of life!
